Important Shots used in Filmmaking

There are several camera angles used in filmmaking, including a wide or long shot, the extreme wide shot, the medium shot or mid -shot low angle, high angle, level angle, close-up and birds-eye view. Each of these shots has its own unique purpose and effect on the story of the film. I believe an actor needs to know why directors use different shots in a story, as they can adjust their performance to communicate the director’s vision.

A Few Explained

Mid-shot
A mid-shot or medium shot is where the camera captures the person from the waist upwards, including the face and some of the background of the scene behind. I use this shot many times.

Wide or long shot
This is a shot that is taken from a distance, so we take in the surrounding area, but we still see the actor clearly in the scene.
