I had an ex who I think withdrew from telling me because when I met my husband to be, he asked me numerous times if I was doing the right thing which confused me at the time. I wanted him to be happy for me. Now looking back and reading your article I realised he must have had stronger feelings. He never married which I thought was a shame.
